OBAMA BOOED AT ELITE 8 GAME... AFTER GOLF OUTING

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nearly half of the crowd at Saturday's Elite 8 game between Syracuse and Marquette at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. booed President Barack Obama when he was shown on the big screen with just over ten minutes to play in the first half. After the boos erupted, a contingent of Obama supporters countered with cheers. Obama also golfed on Saturday for the first time since the sequester cuts went into effect at the beginning of March and then took some of his foursome--and his Secret Service detail--to watch Syracuse oust Marquette and secure a trip to the Final Four. One would have expected a friendlier crowd for the President, but there are still several possible explanations for the boos. Obama and his White House team had supported Georgetown (Syracuse's rival) in the past, and the President had forecast Indiana (who was eliminated by Syracuse) to win the East Regional and go on to win the national title, for example. Or, perhaps they booed bec

Defending tattooed dogs

STOKES COUNTY, NC (WGHP/CNN) - A North Carolina man is defending his decision to tattoo his puppy and post the picture on Facebook. He says he did it for identification, but others say it was cruel. Ernesto Rodriguez, a disabled army veteran and father of three, says he loves his dogs as if they were his children. "Even my kids are like, 'Man, those dogs eat better than we do," Rodriguez said. His puppy, Duchess, is a 4-month-old American bulldog who now boasts a belly tattoo. His other dog, Duke, has one too. "They both have it. They both have their tattoos on them just in case anything happens to them," Rodriguez said. Rodriguez said he gave Duchess the intricate identification after taking her to the vet to get her ears clipped. "I took her to the shop, tattooed her, and she slept the rest of the day," Rodriguez said. Animal advocate Caleb Scott claims the whole story doesn't add up. "Really that's kind of suspicious in

A Rod makes more than the Astros

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez will make more this year than all the Houston Astros combined - a lot more. And he won't even play the first half of the season, if at all. A-Rod's $29 million salary tops the major leagues for the 13th straight season, according to a study of major league contracts by The Associated Press. Rodriguez's Yankees are on track to have the highest payroll on opening day for the 15th straight year, climbing above the Los Angeles Dodgers to a projected $228 million with this week's acquisition of Vernon Wells. With teams due to set opening-day rosters Sunday, the Yankees' payroll will be nearly 10 times the spending of the Astros, who have shrunk their payroll to about $25 million. "When we get on the baseball field with whomever the opponent is, they are not sitting there saying: 'Well, their players make more money than us so therefore you're deemed a winner and we're deemed a loser,'" Astros manager Bo P

Dirty dentist

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Health officials on Thursday urged an Oklahoma oral surgeon's patients to undergo hepatitis and HIV testing, saying filthy conditions behind his office's spiffy facade posed a threat to his 7,000 clients and made him a "menace to the public health." State and county health inspectors went to Dr. W. Scott Harrington's practice after a patient with no known risk factors tested positive for both hepatitis C and the virus that causes AIDS. They found employees using dirty equipment, reusing needles and administering drugs without a license. Harrington voluntarily gave up his license and closed his offices in Tulsa and suburban Owasso and is cooperating with investigators, said Kaitlin Snider, a spokeswoman for the Tulsa Health Department. He faces a hearing April 19 where his license could be permanently revoked. "This is an unprecedented event," Susan Rogers, executive director of the state Board of Dentistry, said in an interview.

FBI Pursuing Real-Time Gmail Spying Powers as “Top Priority” for 2013

Despite the pervasiveness of law enforcement surveillance of digital communication, the FBI still has a difficult time monitoring Gmail, Google Voice, and Dropbox in real time. But that may change soon, because the bureau says it has made gaining more powers to wiretap all forms of Internet conversation and cloud storage a “top priority” this year. Last week, during a talk for the American Bar Association in Washington, D.C., FBI general counsel Andrew Weissmann discussed some of the pressing surveillance and national security issues facing the bureau. He gave a few updates on the FBI’s efforts to address what it calls the “going dark” problem—how the rise in popularity of email and social networks has stifled its ability to monitor communications as they are being transmitted. It’s no secret that under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the feds can easily obtain archive copies of emails. When it comes to spying on emails or Gchat in real time, however, it’s a different stor

CDC: 110,197,000 Venereal Infections in U.S.

(CNSNews.com) - According to new data released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 19.7 million new venereal infections in the United States in 2008, bringing the total number of existing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the U.S. at that time to 110,197,000. The 19.7 million new STIs in 2008 vastly outpaced the new jobs and college graduates created in the United States that year or any other year on record, according to government data. The competition was not close. The STI study referenced by the CDC estimated that 50 percent of the new infections in 2008 occurred among people in the 15-to-24 age bracket. In fact, of the 19,738,800 total new STIs in the United States in 2008, 9,782,650 were among Americans in the 15-to-24 age bracket. By contrast, there were 1,524,092 bachelor’s degrees awarded in the United States in the 2007-2008 school year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That means the total number of n

Higher health care cost....

WASHINGTON (AP) - Insurance companies will have to pay out an average of 32 percent more for medical claims on individual health policies under President Barack Obama's overhaul, the nation's leading group of financial risk analysts has estimated. That's likely to increase premiums for at least some Americans buying individual plans. The report by the Society of Actuaries could turn into a big headache for the Obama administration at a time when many parts of the country remain skeptical about the Affordable Care Act. While some states will see medical claims costs per person decline, the report concluded the overwhelming majority will see double-digit increases in their individual health insurance markets, where people purchase coverage directly from insurers. The disparities are striking. By 2017, the estimated increase would be 62 percent for California, about 80 percent for Ohio, more than 20 percent for Florida and 67 percent for Maryland. Much of the reason fo

Cyprus deal

BRUSSELS (AP) - Cyprus secured a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) package of rescue loans in tense, last-ditch negotiations early Monday, saving the country from a banking system collapse and bankruptcy. "We've put an end to the uncertainty that has affected Cyprus and the euro area over the past week," said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chairs the meetings of the 17-nation eurozone's finance ministers. In return for the bailout, Cyprus must drastically shrink its outsized banking sector, cut its budget, implement structural reforms and privatize state assets, he said. The cash-strapped Mediterranean island nation has been shut out of international markets for almost two years. It needs the bailout to recapitalize its ailing lenders and keep the government afloat. The European Central Bank had threatened to cut crucial emergency assistance to the country's banks by Tuesday without an agreement. Without a deal by Monday night, the tiny Mediterranean island nation o

Residents Struggle As Poverty Hits American Suburbs: CNBC

Like many Americans who move to the suburbs, Tara Simons came to West Hartford, Conn., because she wanted her daughter to grow up in a nice, safe place with good schools. Her fall from a more financially secure suburban life to one among the working poor also happened for the same reason it's happened to so many others. She had a bout of unemployment and couldn't find a new job that paid very well. As a single mother, that's made it hard to hold on to the suburban life that is, in her mind, key to making sure her daughter gets off to the right start. "I'm basically paying to say I live in West Hartford," she said. "It is worth it." It's a struggle that many Americans bruised by the weak economy can relate to. What Kind of Culture Accepts Media Violence Toward Women?

It's not just television and movies that often portray women in a poor light. Print newspapers and magazines are part of the problem, too. In newsroom cultures of newspapers and magazines around the world, the photographic depiction of women in many stand-alone photos amounts, more or less, to what might be called newsroom rape. It's not a pretty picture, and the mindset among editors who green light such photos and write the captions needs to change. If these photos and captions of scantily clad "models" and "campaign girls" were of black men or Islamic men and carried captions such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Get an Eyeful," things would change very quickly. But depicting women this way is business as usual in most male-dominated newsrooms, from the New York Post to Esquire magazine. To raise awareness about gender equality for women in a man's world is not an easy thing, since so much of modern culture and news media continue to

Fifty-two bottles and jail

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Fifty-two bottles of well-aged whiskey disappeared between his lips, police said, and now it's time for a western Pennsylvania man to settle up. John Saunders, the former live-in caretaker of a Pittsburgh-area mansion, faces criminal charges for allegedly drinking more than $100,000 worth of the owner's whiskey. Owner Patricia Hill found nine cases of whiskey hidden in the walls and stairwell of the century-old Georgian mansion built by coal and coke industrialist J.P. Brennan after she bought it in 2012. The Old Farm Pure Rye Whiskey was produced in the early 1900s by the nearby West Overton Distilling Co. "My guess is that Mr. Brennan ordered 10 cases . pre-Prohibition," said Hill, a New Yorker who bought the house to convert it into a bed-and-breakfast. "I was told by his family that family members used to greet him at the door each day with a shot of whiskey." Scottdale police told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.

Skydiver and student killed in Florida

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a skydive instructor and a student who jumped separately have died in Florida. The skydivers, both men, were part of a jump Saturday in Zephyrhills, about 30 miles northeast of Tampa. Authorities say the plane took off about 10:30 a.m. and 22 people jumped. When only 20 returned, authorities started searching for the missing men. The bodies were located about 7:30 p.m. in a wooded area south of the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport. They were found near each other. Pasco County sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow would not comment on whether their parachute's had opened, saying that was part of the investigation. The skydivers were part of a jump through Skydive City in Zephyrhills. Snow says authorities will release the names after next of kin are notified.

Islam attacks.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Islamic extremists infiltrated and attacked the northern Malian city of Gao, the mayor and residents said late Saturday. It was the third major attack on the town since it was liberated by French forces in January. The assault indicates that the radical Islamists remain entrenched and able to attack despite the thousands of French troops who have liberated most of northern Mali's towns from control by the extremists. Reached by telephone, Gao Mayor Sadou Diallo said the Islamic fighters launched their attack inside the Quatrieme Quartier, or Fourth District, a neighborhood inside the city which is divided into a numbered grid. The mayor said Malian forces engaged the fighters and they retreated, but a second column of Islamists then attacked from across the Niger River. He said that by evening the situation appeared to be under control, though residents said they still heard shooting. "There was heavy gunfire. The situation is under control now. The

Starving democrats

Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Sequester nearly starving staffers President Obama has chosen Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida as the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, succeeding Tim Kaine, who announced Tuesday he is running for a U.S. Senate seat from Virginia. By Cheryl K. Chumley -The Washington Times Friday, March 22, 2013 Automatic federal cuts are bringing staffers to the brink of starvation, suggested Debbie Wasserman Schultz, at a recent House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee hearing. Restaurants on the House side of Congress are increasing in cost so much that aides are being “priced out” of a good meal, she said, as Fox News reported. The comments came by way of a discussion about the impacts of the sequester on lawmakers’ office budgets. Rep. Jim Moran said he may be forced to lay off a staffer — and then Ms. Wasserman Schultz weighed in with her tale of hard times. Just to clarify: An 8-ounce bowl of Ham and Bean soup at the Cannon

Salad is more dangerous than beefburgers, leading food expert warns

Salad labelled as "ready-to-eat" is more dangerous than beefburgers, one of Britain`s top food experts has said, following a spate of Cryptosporidium infections linked to the product. Certain types of bacteria found in the pre-cut salad bags can be almost impossible to kill, Professor Hugh Pennington said, unless the leaves are irradiated – a process the public would oppose. His claim follows a Health Protection Agency investigation into an outbreak of salad-linked Cryptosporidium infections that affected around 300 people in England and Scotland in May.

600 pills found

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — Waterville police say they found more than 600 oxycodone pills during a body cavity search of a New York City woman. Ebony Howard and alleged co-conspirator William Waters are scheduled to be arraigned Monday on drug trafficking charges following their weekend arrest. Police say they received a tip from a source that the pair would be in the Waterville area with drugs. Officers arrested them at a gas station just after midnight Saturday. Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey tells the Morning Sentinel that after the arrest, the 28-year-old Howard was searched and police found 645 pills "packed into her body cavities." Rumsey says the drugs have a street value of $20,000. It was not clear if Howard and Waters have lawyers. Copyright 2013 The Associated Press.

5 men confess to gang-raping Swiss tourist in India

New Delhi (CNN)  -- Five men have confessed to gang-raping a Swiss tourist in central India, authorities said Sunday. Confessions in police custody are not admissible in court, however, and can be retracted.
