Phone app tells tales on murderer

SEOUL (Reuters) – It began with a simple phrase -- "brace yourself" -- sent by a university professor to his mistress via a South Korean messaging service app used by millions every day. But now the message has become key evidence in a murder investigation, with the professor arrested for killing his wife and his mistress sought as an accomplice, police said. The professor, whose full name was not given, went to the head office of the "Kakao Talk" messenger service provider after the murder and asked them to delete the message. But the message was saved for a month and police were able to retrieve it as part of an investigation of his phone records. Eventually the professor confessed to strangling his wife, using his mistress's car to transport the body, and dumping it into the sea. He and his wife were in the process of getting a divorce. "The message helped us discover that the woman was his accomplice," a spokesman at a police station in the souther

You're So Vain, You Probably Think This Facebook Post Is About You

Let's conduct a little survey. Answer these questions about yourself. How often do you change your Facebook profile picture? What percentage of all the Facebook photos you've uploaded are profile pictures? How many Facebook profile pictures do you have, total? Pixable, the social photo experts, have just established themselves as the   leading scientists of photo-related Facebook vanity . Their Director of Analytics extracted some data from the vast quanitites of photos that pass through their warehouse, and they put together a (not-so-beautiful) infographic summing up some of the more interesting tidbits. The abstract to this study would read something like this:   People on   Facebook   are vain . Sometimes science only needs to restate the obvious, with data. You're on Facebook, too, after all. How did you measure up? BY DAVID ZAXToday

Top Ten New Species: "Walking" Fish, T. Rex Leech, More : "It has a double penis, is as long as a tall human, and lives in a heavily populated area of the Philippines. Yet somehow the 6.6-foot-long (2-meter-long) lizard Varanus bitatawa (pictured) has gone undetected by science until recently. The researchers suspect the fruit-eating tree dweller escaped scientific detection until now because there've been few reptile surveys of the mountain forests where V. bitatawa—or the Sierra Madre forest monitor—lives. The 22-pound (10-kilogram) lizards are also 'incredibly secretive,' study team member and biologist Daniel Bennett of Mampam Conservation told National Geographic News in 2010."

Nobody needs ‘friends’ like these

Sometimes it pays to be wary of your friends!   As more people turn to Facebook and Twitter for much of their online communicating, Internet scammers and spammers are trying to cash in by hijacking the names and images of users’ “friends’’ and “followers.’’ They use the stolen identities to place fake come-ons and shady pitches alongside all the funny pictures and snide remarks posted by people legitimately granted access to online accounts. The goal is to trick users into buying products, volunteering credit card numbers and other personal information, or unknowingly installing malicious software that can damage computers. Too often, the tactics work, according to computer security specialists, in part because of our faith in people we know. “When someone posts a link, they say, ‘Oh, that’s from my friend, I trust that link,’ ’’ said Maxim Weinstein, executive director of StopBadware Inc., a Cambridge nonprofit that helps Internet users guard against computer viruses and spyware. PastPost Recalls What You Did On Facebook Last Year  Can’t remember what you did yesterday? Yeah, we can’t either. Well, a new application intends to fix that. PastPosts , created by tech veterans Jonathan Wegener, Matt Raoul and Benny Wong, sends users a daily email — if you didn’t log in every day last year, you only get messages on days that correspond to when you’d used Facebook in the prior year. The daily missive comes in an easy-to-read format showing wall comments, posted photos, status updates, and more from your personal Facebook archives. Wegener said the idea came from an app the guys created for Foursquare a few months ago called 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo that does pretty much the same thing. “The response to that product has been really positive and thousands of people have signed up and told us they love it,” he said in an interview. “PastPosts is the next logical extension, bringing that same proven concept to the largest personal data creation platform, Face

Twitter officially acquires TweetDeck | Gadgetell

Twitter officially acquires TweetDeck | Gadgetell : "Twitter announced today that it has officially acquired the popular TweetDeck app. The team behind TweetDeck will join Twitter, though they wil continue to focus on the platform that many of us know and love. Unlike the Twitter acquisition of Atebits which created the official Twitter apps for iOS and Mac out of Tweetie for both platforms, TweetDeck will remain the same for the foreseeable future. Both TweetDeck and Twitter label the platform as being great for brands, marketers, and power users in general, which TweetDeck certainly is. So it sounds like TweetDeck will continue as sort of the “professional” brand for Twitter."

Scientists trick the brain into experiencing Barbie-doll size

Scientists trick the brain into experiencing Barbie-doll size : "According to the textbooks, our perception of size and distance is a product of how the brain interprets different visual cues, such as the size of an object on the retina and its movement across the visual field. Some researchers have claimed that our bodies also influence our perception of the world, so that the taller you are, the shorter distances appear to be. However, there has been no way of testing this hypothesis experimentally -- until"

Scientists find happy men are 'significantly less attractive' to ladies | Mail Online : "The University Of British Columbia study, which is the first to report a significant gender difference in the attractiveness of smiles, helps explain the enduring allure of 'bad boys' and other iconic gender stereotypes. It is also the first study to investigate the attractiveness of displays of pride and shame. Lead researcher Professor Jessica Tracy said: 'While showing a happy face is considered essential to friendly social interactions, including those involving sexual attraction - few studies have actually examined whether a smile is, in fact, attractive. 'This study finds that men and women respond very differently to displays of emotion, including smiles.'"

Barred! Shock jock Michael Savage has U.K. ban reaffirmed | Mail Online : "Controversial 'shock jock' radio presenter Michael Savage, who was barred from entering the UK two years ago for his extreme views, has had the ban reaffirmed. The Conservative-led British government announced in July it would only lift the ban initiated by the previous Labour leadership if Savage took back statements he had made on his broadcasts that were deemed a 'threat to national security'. And while the U.K has never specified which comments it found so dangerous, an attorney for the British government has stayed true to its threat, reaffirming the ban."

A CIA team in a nearby house watched the Bin Laden compound for months before the SEALs moved in. They fitted their rented safe house with mirrored glass so they could spy on the suspects without being seen. The spies used long-lens cameras, infrared imaging equipment and hi-tech bugs to try to prove Bin Laden was hiding in the house. They also used satellite radar to check for escape tunnels from the compound. The CIA team had several sightings of a tall man striding through the courtyard of the compound. They were never able to confirm that the man they dubbed "The Pacer" was Bin Laden. But Obama gave the go-ahead for the raid anyway, in a decision aides said was one of the bravest a US president had ever made. As they worked, the CIA agents had to make sure they were not spotted - either by the terrorists or the Pakistani authorities. The fact they were able to work without being seen is yet another embarrassment for the security services in Pakistan. They are already fac
